Facilitation Guide: The Tutu Courageous Leadership Course

The Tutu Courageous Leadership Course Facilitation Guide is a manual, designed to facilitate the face-to-face Tutu Courageous Leadership Course. Interested schools and organisations can contact the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation at tcl@tutu.org.za for more information.

The ‘Tutu Courageous Leadership Course’ was developed by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation as part of the Foundation’s Leading for Humanity programme. It aims to inspire young people aged 15-35 to take courageous actions that will create positive waves of change. The five course modules are based on five short videos, each focusing on a quality of courageous leadership exemplified in the life of Desmond Tutu:

  1. Action – Do what you can where you are
  2. Ubuntu – Honour the humanity of all people
  3. Indignation – Channel righteous anger for transformation
  4. Dialogue – Dare to have courageous conversations
  5. Hope – Know what you are fighting for

The course is also available as an Online Course on the Civics Academy website: just click on ‘Courses’ and ‘Tutu Courageous Leadership Course’.

The development of the Courageous Leadership Course, the online course and the facilitation guide has been made possible through the generous support of the Bavarian State Chancellery. The project is part of a series of ongoing capacity-building projects and programmes implemented by the Hanns Seidel Foundation, which make up the long-standing partnership between Bavaria and the Western Cape, established in 1995.
